How to set a minimum order value for Cash on Delivery on Shopify
Create a rule that hides Cash on Delivery when the cart total is below your minimum. In CashShield: condition Cart total less than your minimum (for example 499), action Hide COD. Shoppers above the minimum still see COD; shoppers below it pay with your prepaid methods.
Why small COD orders are risky
A failed COD delivery costs you shipping both ways, and that cost depends on the parcel and the distance, not on what's inside it. So the same failed delivery that a large order can absorb can turn a small one into a loss.
An illustration with round numbers: if a ₹350 order earns you ₹90 after product costs, and the courier charges about ₹60 to deliver it and another ₹60 to bring it back, one refused parcel loses you more than that order would have made. Plug in your own shipping rates and margins before you pick a threshold.
Step by step with CashShield
- Install CashShield from the Shopify App Store and pick a plan on Shopify's plan page (7-day free trial).
- Open Rules and choose Create rule.
- Set the action to Hide COD.
- Add a condition: Cart total, less than, and your minimum.
- Optional: add a Country condition (for example
IN) so the minimum applies only where you set it. - Save the rule and test an order just below and just above the threshold in Checkout preview.
Picking the number
- Look at the cart values of your COD orders that came back. If returns cluster below a certain amount, that's a natural cut-off.
- Consider your average order value: a minimum far above it hides COD from most shoppers, which can cost more sales than the returns it saves.
- Revisit it after a few weeks. Compare COD share, prepaid share, and returns before and after.
Limits worth knowing
- The rule compares the cart total that Shopify passes to the checkout function. Test with a real checkout if you rely on shipping or discounts being in or out of that total.
- CashShield can hide, rename, or move COD, but Shopify doesn't let a payment customization add a COD fee or change the order total.
Questions merchants ask
- What do shoppers below the minimum see?
- Your other payment methods. COD is hidden only for their checkout. If COD is your only payment method, hiding it leaves them no way to pay, so keep at least one prepaid method on.
- Can I set a different minimum for each country?
- Yes. Combine a Cart total condition with a Country condition in the same rule, or create one rule per country. If your store sells in more than one currency, test the threshold in each currency you sell in.
- Can I also hide COD on very large orders?
- Yes. Add a second rule with Cart total greater than your maximum and the action Hide COD, so high-value orders are paid before they ship.
